Mahomet woman's death probed as homicide
MAHOMET – Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup has identified the woman who was found dead outside Mahomet on Monday morning.
Northrup said Holly Cassano, 22, of Mahomet, was pronounced dead at 2:10 p.m. Monday at her home on Dupage Street in Candlewood Estates, a mobile home park.
Northrup said Ms. Cassano's death is being investigated as a homicide.
Police received a call at 10:38 a.m. from one of Ms. Cassano's relatives. When police arrived at the home, she was already dead. Police said Ms. Cassano was believed to be at home alone.
Northrup said an autopsy will be performed today in Bloomington, with an inquest to be held at a later date.
The death is being investigated by the Champaign County coroner's office and the Champaign County sheriff's office, with help from a state police crime technician.
"We are investigating as a probable homicide at this time," said Champaign County Sheriff Dan Walsh. "We are investigating, with the assistance of the state police."
Champaign County sheriff's deputies have closed a portion of Dupage Street near McLean Street as they continue their investigation.
