Autopsy finds Edgewood man drowned
TUSCOLA – An autopsy conducted Tuesday indicated that drowning was the cause of death of a man whose car went into a pond near Tuscola on Monday afternoon.
Calvin Jones, 84, of Edgewood died before two Douglas County sheriff's deputies and two Tuscola firefighters were able to pull him out of the water.
Douglas County Coroner Joseph A. Victor said an autopsy conducted Tuesday morning at Springfield Memorial Medical Center showed drowning as a cause of death.
According to a state police report, police received a 911 call at 1:10 p.m. Monday about a car in a pond.
Mr. Jones' car had been headed south on Interstate 57 and left the road, crashed through a fence and landed in a pond at milepost 213 near Tuscola.
By the time emergency personnel arrived, the car was submerged in the pond, according to Sgt. Bill Emery of the state police.
Victor said his office and state police are investigating.
