House says 'no' to temporary income tax proposal

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois lawmakers seemed headed for another overtime session Sunday night after failing to pass a tax increase aimed at eliminating a budget deficit estimated at as much as $11 billion.

Gov. Pat Quinn's plan to temporarily increase the Illinois income tax by 50 percent failed weakly in the Illinois House on Sunday evening, attracting only 42 of the 60 votes needed to pass it.
