URBANA – Road work this week will disrupt traffic on Race Street, Goodwin Avenue and Springfield Avenue in Urbana.

– Race Street will be closed from Windsor Road to Mumford Drive starting today for concrete patching, according to the city. The closure is expected to last three weeks.

The street will be open for the University of Illinois football game on Nov. 14, then closed again on Nov. 16-20.

The only traffic allowed on this portion of Race: residents, emergency traffic and MTD buses. They'll be able to drive in the northbound direction only. Southbound traffic will be prohibited, as will through traffic.

– Work on Goodwin is planned to begin today between Green Street and Stoughton Street. Also, resurfacing is planned for the parking lanes on Goodwin between Green and Gregory Drive, as well as the intersections at Illinois, Oregon and Nevada streets.

– Resurfacing on Springfield Avenue is scheduled for Tuesday between Mathews Avenue and Harvey Street.

Goodwin Avenue and Springfield Avenue will remain open to traffic during the work. But delays can be expected and the city urges alternative routes.

When the resurfacing is occurring at the intersections of Goodwin with Illinois, Oregon and Nevada, those intersections will be closed to traffic. Each intersection will be resurfaced one at a time so traffic can reroute to another intersection to access Goodwin Avenue.

When the resurfacing is directly in front of the entrance to a parking lot, traffic wanting to enter or exit can expect delays of 15 to 20 minutes until the resurfacing is complete at that location.

Pedestrians will not be allowed to cross the pavement for about 20 minutes after it is laid.

The temperature of freshly laid asphalt can range from 250 to 350 degrees.

"We do not want anyone to walk across the extremely hot pavement," said city engineer Jennifer Selby in a release. "Any detours in your walking route are for your own safety."
