SPRINGFIELD – Six area businesses and individuals are among 100 identified by the state Department of Revenue as collectively owing the state at least $6.3 million in delinquent taxes.

The 100 are not among the biggest scofflaws, said Susan Hofer, a spokeswoman for the department.

According to Illinois law, the state is able to post the names of taxpayers who have owed at least $1,000 in taxes for six months, been notified by certified mail and have been given the chance to pay. Leading up to the posting on the Department of Revenue's Web site, the agency said it sent two rounds of notices to nearly 36,000 delinquent taxpayers, which generated more than $15 million in payments.

"Every year there are millions of Illinois taxpayers who pay their taxes in full and on time, but some taxpayers try to avoid their responsibilities," said Brian Hamer, director of the Department of Revenue. "We use our online list of delinquent taxpayers to help us collect payments from those who have refused to pay their fair share."

The area residents and businesses that owe back taxes include:

– David Diedrich, whom the state lists with an address of 702 S. Jeffrey Drive, Mahomet, who owes $157,718 in individual income taxes dating back to 1998. Diedrich also was on the Revenue Department's 2005 list, at that time owing $146,515. Records show that Diedrich filed for bankruptcy in 1999. There is no local telephone listing for Diedrich.

– Warren Gossard, whom the state lists with an address of 2513 County Road 450 East, Mahomet, who owes $19,018 in individual income taxes dating back to 1999. Phone calls were not returned.

– Kathy L. Gritton, whom the state lists with an address of 2211 St. Frances Road, Danville, who owes $24,296 in individual income taxes dating to 2007. There is no local telephone listing for Gritton.

– Order Logistics Inc., which the state lists with an address of 3358 Big Pine Trail, C, which owes $37,521 in withholding taxes dating to March 2008. The company's phone line has been disconnected.

– Stephen W. Strader of Danville and his business, Stradeco Inc., both were identified by the Revenue Department. Strader owes $30,719 in individual taxes and Stradeco owes $30,657 in business and withholding taxes, according to the agency.

"I'm into it pretty good," said Strader, who said he is trying to repay the state in $500-a-month increments.

"I'm trying to pay it back. But if you don't have it, you can't pay them back," he said.

Strader's commercial painting business once employed as many as 12 people, he said. "There's no one now," he said.

Hofer said businesses and individuals who cannot keep up with tax payments can work out a repayment plan with the state.

"The bottom line is that when you get a letter from the Department of Revenue, don't ignore it," she said.
