Champaign council to discuss proposed property tax levy

CHAMPAIGN – The owner of a $150,000 home in Champaign would pay about $16 more in city property taxes under a proposed property-tax levy to be considered by the city council Tuesday night.

City finance staff is recommending a $20.3 million tax levy for taxes payable next summer, an 8.3 percent increase over this year's levy of $18.7 million. But the proposed tax levy assumes a higher equalized assessed valuation for the city than finance officials actually expect to be the case, which would lower the amount of money the city can collect.
